In the face of escalating heatwaves, it's time to explore alternative cooling methods, particularly in regions like southern Europe where air conditioning is not the norm. While the recent heatwave in Europe has sparked discussions about the need for air conditioning, I argue that there are more sustainable and cost-effective ways to keep cool. Drawing on my personal experience in Sicily, I offer a range of tips and insights into how to survive the heat without relying on energy-intensive solutions. From simple window coverings to strategic clothing choices and cultural practices, these methods not only reduce energy consumption but also provide a more authentic and environmentally friendly approach to beating the heat. By embracing these techniques, we can not only make the next heatwave more manageable but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
